Fitness In The 21st Century
These days, one of the most discussed issues in general conversations is health. You would definitely have been a part of a conversation where somebody starts saying, "I started going to the gym today.", and everyone chips in with their versions of successful, partly successful, and unsuccessful efforts to get themselves to an acceptable level of fitness. The rigors of the twenty-first century are often not physical, and hence the need for exercise and diet control. Let us look at the only way that you can start steering your life towards health - determination!
The human brain is an amazing piece of work that can enable you to accomplish great feats considered impossible... On a daily basis, we hear stories of people who have been able to achieve seemingly impossible tasks. Extreme activities like walking on embers, swimming in ice-cold water, etc., can only be achieved when the body works in tandem with the mind. It is no surprise, therefore, that people who have been successful in keeping themselves fit have been able to do so with steady determination.
Determination is the key to success - in any walk of life. Thousands of researches have proven the fact that self determination is an essential key to success, especially in fitness. Staying fit today, requires one to be able to focus on the task at hand and maintain the zeal with which they started. Irrespective of which diet plan you select or exercise regimen you choose, unless you have self determination, it is impossible to see your goal through. So, as you take your first step to a fitter and healthier life, ask yourself this - "Can I maintain the same level of motivation to continue this activity for as long as it takes?"

If your answer is yes, congratulations! You will find one way or another to find the elusive healthy life. However, if you are like the overwhelming majority of people, and are not certain of being able to maintain a steady resolve, here are a few tips to help you:
- Set a short term challenge for yourself, preferably for a month.
- The challenge should not be too drastic. For example if you are planning to start an exercise routine, do not aim for a 2 hours jog to start with. Rather keep a shorter time period of 30 minutes of brisk walking.
- If you are planning to bring changes to an unhealthy diet, rather than going for a drastic change, aim at reducing your carbohydrate and fat intake marginally.
- Avoid diet and exercise fads! The internet is full of so called "effective diets" which ask for a lot of self sacrifice by cutting down on your eating pattern. Although these diets promise the moon like losing 10 kg in 5 days etc, these diets just make you lose some of your body water. These may in turn cause dehydration and other serious health issues.
- The best way of approaching a lifestyle change is through consulting a professional like a certified dietician or a physical trainer. These professionals would study your body structure, lifestyle, needs etc. and then advise you the best way to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
