Binge Eating Disorders:
Almost everybody has an urge to overeat from time to time. There are times when you see your favorite deep dish pizza or a cheesy pasta and unable to resist, you end up eating more than your stomach can hold. However, when this urge comes too often for the good of your body and beyond your control, then it can be termed as an eating disorder.

The most common and easily recognizable symptom of a binge eating disorder is compulsive overeating in which the person feels powerless to stop. These episodes may come as frequent episodes, possibly on a daily basis. People with this disorder are often aware of their problem and undergo a great feeling of depression both during as well as after eating. They are also disgusted and guilty over their weakness but do not attempt to undo the effects of their binging by making lifestyle changes.
Tips to overcome binge eating disorder:
- Ensure that you eat breakfast everyday: As you may have heard a million times, breakfast is the most important meat of the day. This is the time your body is in most need of food and nutrition. This also starts the metabolism of your body for the day. If you skip your breakfast, there is a higher possibility of you feeling starved soon and eating to more than compensate for the skipped breakfast.
- Eat at least 3 meals in a day. Although studies have proved that people who eat small meals every 2 hours have better chances of maintaining a healthy weight. However, if eating this frequently does not suit your lifestyle, ensure that you have the 3 meals of the day in proper times.
- Ask for help. If you stay with your family, ask your parents, partner or spouse to help you out with your diet. If you are staying alone, you could join a local support group. When you have company and somebody to motivate you through these difficult and trying times, making this tough lifestyle change becomes a lot easier.
- De-stress: It has been noted that one of the main reasons why people suffering from binge eating disorder is stress. This could be either work related stress or that in your personal life. If you too notice a similar symptom in yourself, ensure that you find out alternate methods of de-stressing. These can be anything starting from shopping to outdoor sports. Having a new hobby like Salsa dancing, reading, gardening, or golfing goes a long way.
Along with these small changes, remember it is important to have self determination. Although the initial weeks and months may seem trying, the rewards for your self control and hard work are rich.
